ABVI-Goodwill Receives Two Gold Medal Building Awards

Rochester, NY (April 6) – The Association for the Blind Visually Impaired (ABVI)-Goodwill was recently selected as a Gold Medal winner by Building of America for two recent building projects. Building of America Gold Medal Awards are given only to the most “innovative, unique and challenging new projects.”

The first Gold Medal was awarded for the building of the Goodwill store in Macedon, NY. This new building was designed by Bergmann Associates and was built by B.I.G. construction. This store, located on Route 31 in Macedon, was the first ABVI-Goodwill building that sought LEED certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.

The second Gold Medal was awarded for the building of the new ABVI-Goodwill Call Center, located on our South Clinton Avenue Campus. This project was a redesign of an existing building and was designed by SWBR Architects and built by J.C. Pilato, Inc. The Call Center was also built to meet stringent environmental standards required for LEED certification.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Our focus on LEED certification positions ABVI-Goodwill as one of the first not-for-profit organizations in our region, and one of the first retail operators in our area, to demonstrate this level of environmental awareness.
