National Industries for the Blind Recognizes ABVI-Goodwill
For Efforts to Improve Employment Among People Who Are Blind
Rochester, NY (April 6) – The Association for the Blind Visually Impaired (ABVI)- Goodwill of Greater Rochester, Inc., received an Employment Retention/Growth/Upward Mobility Award from National Industries for the Blind (NIB) in recognition of the agency’s demonstrated commitment to increase employment and economic opportunities for people who are blind. This is the fourth consecutive year NIB has honored the Rochester agency with the award.
This program recognizes agencies that retain and/or grow employment for people who are blind working on AbilityOne projects, and to recognize achievements in the areas of placement and upward mobility.
“We are proud to provide employment opportunities for people who are blind,” said A. Gidget Hopf, Ed.D., President and CEO of ABVI-Goodwill. “Our team members who are blind represent a qualified, dedicated and loyal workforce. We are honored to serve as an example in the community of the capabilities of people who are blind.“
While 70 percent of working age Americans who are blind are not employed, NIB associated agencies such as ABVI-Goodwill are working to change this statistic.
“At NIB, we are pleased to reward our associated agencies for their efforts to retain and grow employment and create upward mobility options for people who are blind,” said Kevin Lynch, President and CEO of NIB. “These awards are evidence of their hard work to enable more people who are blind to achieve socioeconomic independence and equality. That is a shared mission that is vitally important to us all.” The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI)-Goodwill Industries of Greater Rochester, Inc., founded in 1911, has a mission to prepare and empower people who are blind or visually impaired to be self-sufficient and contribute to their families and communities. Through a variety of entrepreneurial business initiatives, including manufacturing, call center, food service and Goodwill retail operations, the agency is able to support this mission and provide programs, services, career training, and employment opportunities to people who are blind or visually impaired or have other barriers to employment or independence. At National Industries for the Blind (NIB), it is our mission to enhance the opportunities for economic and personal independence of persons who are blind, primarily through creating, sustaining and improving employment. NIB and 88 associated agencies serve as the largest employer for people who are blind by the sale of SKILCRAFT® products and services through the AbilityOne Program, formerly the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program. www.NIB.org.
